Do You Eat At The Table?

One of the best and worst parts of a blog is the fact that you can only see parts of a persons life.  This is of course, amazing and wonderful, to get a peep into the lives of fascinating and unique people, but sometimes it’s hard to remember that it is just that – a peep.  Not the full picture.

One of the areas that we are really trying to work on but rarely (never) shows up on blog is that Anthony and I are chronic couch eaters.  At the end of a long day, we are tired and lazy and don’t want to eat at the table, we want to slouch on the sofa and watch Grand Designs (my all time favorite TV show. It’s literally the only TV show we watch, and it’s FANTASTIC!) However, eating on the couch really doesn’t sit well with me (pun intended.) One, as someone who has a significant history with eating issues, eating on the couch while the TV means I am not paying full attention to my food, digestion, and satiation.  It also means that Anthony and I aren’t connecting and talking, we are phasing out. Finally, it’s not celebrating the beautiful food that one of us prepared.

So, I’m working hard to change that.  Here are the steps I’m taking.

1. Make It Purty One thing I’m doing is trying to set the table in the early afternoon, before I change my mind.

2. Have a cocktail hour. My grandmother always (read: always) has a cocktail hour. Every day, at around 5, she pours herself and some friends a glass of wine, and serves it up with nibbles.  She’s done this as long as I can remember, and it’s a great way to get into eating at the table with some joy and frivolity.

3.  Make reasonable expectations. I know we won’t be perfect about not eating on the couch.  We both enjoy it, and let’s face it, on days when I don’t get home until 8:30, I don’t really want to do much besides crash and relax.  So, we’ve said that we’ll eat at the table at least 3-4 times per week to start.  It’s not perfect, but it’s manageable, and makes when we do watch and eat feel even more indulgent.

QOTD: Do you eat at the table? How often?

Hungry Mung-ry

Today was the laziest day (after the 5 mile run, of course!) ever.

Let’s put it this way – it’s 8:00pm, and I’m still in my PJ’s. Sunday is great that way.

Most of the day was spent researching new vs. used fridges and washing machines. As a New Yorker, I can’t tell you how weird it is to be researching this. I truly never thought I’d be buying one of those things, as I sort of counted on apartments that came with fridges, and laundromats around the corner! How things change.

All our research on white goods made us hungry. We knew we wanted a protein-rich dinner, but what?

Experience Asian Organic Mung Bean fettuchini to the rescue! Never mind they misspelled fettuccine on the label, how on earth would it taste?

IMG_3285.JPG

I ordered these with our organic vegetable box delivery (I’ll post on it soon, but it’s a fantastic service in the Brisbane area) out of curiosity. The ingredients – mung beans, water – didn’t sound like they would make a particularly satisfying pasta, but I’m always game to try anything once. Plus, they were on sale. So, why not?

To make a long story short, we loved them. The consistency was chewy, al dente, and the noodles had a hearty flavor of their own. Not to mention, 20 grams of protein per serving is amazing for a noodle, and we finished our meal feeling satisfied. I served the noodles with spinach and left-over meatballs, and by the end, we were quite content.

Of course, no pasta dish is complete without a little parmesan cheese, right?

IMG_3289.JPG

After this meal, we were so satisfied but not overly stuffed. It also feels great to know I’ve done good by my muscles by helping them repair with a meal with over 40 grams of protein.

Tomorrow is an off-day, which I’m actually very ready for. My legs could use a little pampering.

Sweet dreams (or, good morning, US folks!)

Day Time Dates

In a few short days, Anthony goes back to work (yay, Anthony and his new job!) and our six months of non-stop together time comes to an end. While I’m so happy for him and his new opportunities, I’ll also miss him like crazy.

To celebrate his new job and each other, we had a lovely day-time date today.

We started with a workout

of a 3 mile run at 11:10 pace. It was actually cold in Brisbane this morning, and I felt my legs struggling to warm up. We did though, and it felt great.

Breakfast

Was a gorgeous raspberry and banana smoothie with egg protein. I am starting to experiment with using Anthony’s awesome camera for food photos, but unfortunately, I haven’t quite figured out or had the time to get them on my computer. So, it looked basically like this, except purple.

Then, we headed into the city.

After running a few errands, we headed to Grill’d, an artisanal burger place.

IMG_3160.JPG

Grill’d makes beautiful 100% grass fed beef and lamb burgers, as well as chicken burgers, veggie burgers, salads, etc. They also have a stellar drinks menu, which I’d love to indulge in on an evening date!IMG_3152.JPG

We started with pasture-raised lamb meatballs dipped in hummus. They were a perfect bite size portion, and were drool-worthy.

IMG_3157.JPG

Then, I ordered the Simply Grilled without a bun, which was a grass fed beef-burger served atop salad greens. I got extra pickles, beets, and mustard.

IMG_3155.JPG

My only complaint was the ridiculous amount of mayo-relish it came with. I thought of relish as the pure green stuff, and this was just mayo. I ended up scooping it all out, but I felt like it contaminated my lettuce. The burger, however, was great. A thin patty, perfectly charred, but because of the grass-fed nature, it tasted really gamey, just the way I like it.

IMG_3154.jpg

Anthony got a chicken burger called the Tuscan delight and a snack sized fries. I may or may not have had a fry…two. ;-)

I like the little touches Grill’d does to make it feel really classy, like a pitcher of water with ice, lime, and a strainer.

IMG_3158.jpg

After lunch, we headed to Strike Bowling Bar for two games of 10-pin!

IMG_3162.JPG IMG_3163.JPG

Ant decided to be super romantic and rent the entire alley for just the two of us, so we could have some alone time!

IMG_3177.JPG

Just kidding. We’re just the only people dorky enough to bowl at 12:30 on a Tuesday. However, because no one else was there, we were free to be total goof balls.

IMG_3165.JPG

The game was filled with incredible highs…

IMG_3178.JPG IMG_3188.JPGIMG_3181.JPG

And ridiculous lows.

IMG_3196.JPG

All in all, our games could have used some improvement.IMG_3198.JPG

But we had a blast, which is all that matters.

Dinner

Was steamed veggies with avocado upstairs with Ant’s fam. So nice to relax and not cook!IMG_0634.JPG

Sweet dreams, all!

The Best Turkey Burgers Ever

I come with joyous news…

Sadie has returned!

Sadie the camera

Shipped all the way from the U.S.A. to play with me, thanks to my awesome (and ever patient) mother. I am so happy to have her back.

To celebrate her return and our stellar Workout this morning (a 3 mile run that was as hilly as Hades) we went to see the movie we’ve been dying to attend…

The Avengers tickets

The movie theaters in Brisbane are p-l-u-s-h – assigned seating, fancy food, and huge screens. Anthony had his treat…Anthony being silly

And I had mine.

overnight oats

Ok, not quite the same, but it was a gorgeous, luscious, big batch of overnight (or, 45 minute) oats. With loads of berries.

The movie, in short, was fantastic.

The Avengers poster

What surprised me most about it is how hilariously funny it was. Particularly, moments with the Hulk were classic slapstick and old-school comedy, which created a really nice balance in a super high-tech, cars flying and exploding in the air, sci-fi magic movie.

After the movie, it was late and we were hun-ga-ry!

Dinner

I decided to throw together an old favorite done a new way – turkey burgers.

Turkey burger

This dinner is bound to become a new classic in our rotation, as it was easy, quick and totally delicious. The turkey burgers were some of the best I’ve had (if I do say so myself): moist, juicy, and cooked by Ant to perfection.

Turkey Burgers

Gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, grain-free, corn-free, sugar-free

Recipe by Kat Reiner

Serves: 5

Prep-time: 10 minutes

Cook-time: 12-16 minutes

Total time: 22 minutes

Ingredients

  • 500 grams fresh minced turkey, 92% lean
  • 4 tablespoons chickpea flour
  • 1 chopped red pepper
  • 1/2 onion, diced finely
  • 1 egg and 1 egg white
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.
  2. Form the mixture into 5-6 patties, about the size of your palm
  3. Heat an oiled electric griddle or fry-pan or grill to medium-high heat
  4. Cook the patties for about 6-8 minutes per side, or until cooked on one side, depending on the thickness of the patties.
  5. Patties are done when internal temperature is 165 degrees, or it’s not pink in the middle.

We enjoyed our patties on top of corn tortillas, with an egg-white on top, a few slices of avocado, salsa, arugula, and roasted brussels sprouts.  Ant loved the burgers, but suggested that next time, we add some spices to them, like chili powder or paprika. We’ll have to play with that more. It was a fantastic meal, and now, all that tryptophan is making me sleepy! Night, friends.

Wordless Wednesday – Highlights of La Cucina alla Toscana

Tuscan food has always, is, and will always be my absolute favorite cuisine. Rustic, simple, based on perfectly fresh, seasonal ingredients speaking for themselves, La Cucina Toscana is my ideal. Strongly featured are white beans, chickpeas, spinach, and of course, the infamous Florentine steak. Here are some highlight meals since we’ve gotten here. All have ranged from cheap to affordable, some were at home, some at ristorante and trattorie. Enjoy!
