Santa Kat is Coming to Town

Anthony and I woke up very early today to surprise my mama. Since we’re leaving for Australia on Tuesday, the only time we could celebrate our family holidays (Christmas and Hannukah combined in one glorious wintery pudding) is tomorrow. So, we’ve been scrambling to get all our shopping done, etc., but we also have had no time to decorate our tree. Mom has been just as busy as the rest of us, so we decided to put on our little hannukah fairy wings on and get up before light to decorate. Since I still wasn’t feeling 100%, we decided to skip the workout today, though I may hop on the elliptical for a light workout this afternoon. We’ll see.

We started with this…

And proceeded to make a total mess of ornaments. I love this part of the process, however, because it allows me to get reacquainted with so many of the ornaments we’ve had since I was a little girl.

Beautiful Holiday-ified room

To tell the truth, as a Jewish woman, sometimes the fact that my family celebrates Christmas can feel challenging to me.  I have a great deal of respect for Christians and for the Holidays they celebrate, and I feel strange hijacking the holiday for the sake of commercialism and simple pleasure.  I also feel an element of disrespect towards my own faith, as if I am forgetting who I am by celebrating the holiday.

That being said, I will take any excuse to celebrate with my beautiful family. Especially when I consider the fact that I have no idea where I’ll be for next holiday season, I am choosing to put my reservations away, and just enjoy tomorrow and the joy of the Holiday’s in New York.

Breakfast

Breakfast was my (yet again) pumpkin smoothie, with

I also had a rice cake with almond butter that went unphotographed.

Lunch

Lunch was an Amy’s frozen Indian meal (again…repetition repetition) with a bowl of leftover zucchini and onion, followed by a bosc pear. Dinner tonight with friends at our neighborhood Mexican restaurant – such fun!

Have a great day!

Question of the Day: What’s your favorite part of the Holiday season?

Out on the Town

Wow, how things can change in 24 hours!

Last night, I was out on the town with my gorgeous family, enjoying a divine meal at Frankie’s Spuntino 570. Tonight, I’m in bed, eating canned soup and rice cakes.

Let’s hope tomorrow will be a bit more like yesterday, shall we?

Workout of the Day:

I wasn’t feeling well, but I thought it was just from the wine, or the three gnocchi I had, choosing to ignore totally forgetting that gnocchi are not only potato and also have flour in them. So, we did a gentle workout to see if it helped. It didn’t.

  • 5 minute uphill walking (7.5 incline, 4.2 pace)
  • 30 minutes elliptical (level 10)

Breakfast was a pumpkin smoothie that, no joke, I forgot to photograph again (but it was still delicious.)

Lunch was an Amy’s frozen Palak Paneer that while delish, is not worth taking up your computer’s brain space with a photo, as well as a fresh and perfectly sweet bosc pear.

Dinner was this Health Valley Organic* reduced sodium garden vegetable soup.

health valley organic

I have to tell you, as someone guilty of eating almost exclusively full sodium foods, this soup pleasantly surprised me with it’s flavor. Considering it was canned soup, it tasted fairly fresh and rather bold in it’s spicing.

Yesterday’s dinner was far more interesting, however, and far more delicious. My dad was itching to get to Frankie’s Suptino 570, the third installment of Frank Castronovo and Frank Fancinelli’s gorgeous Italian Frankie’s Spuntino in the village. So, we braved the traffic (both the president and the Rockefeller center tree) and headed downtown.

Frankie's 570

The restaurant was warmly lit and elegant in it’s simplicity. It felt quite cozy but not terribly loud, which is a pleasant change.

Frankie's 570 interior

The menu is simple, classically Italian fair executed beautifully. They specialize in classics and a wide variety of antipasto, with artfully prepared vegetables, cheeses and meats.

While it was hard to choose from the wonderful and rare specials (venison, anyone? How about pork cheeks?) we selected three starters for the four of us to share.

Frankie's famous meatballs

Frankie's meatballs

We started with the meatballs, which have been rated as some of the best in the city, and I’d be inclined to agree with this assessment. Tender, bold and moist, I could have eaten four bowls of these gladly, and taken a bath in the sauce.

Prawns

We also shared the prawn special and the jerusalem artichoke salad, both of which were light and lovely.

For dinner, I was having a massive vegetable craving, so had four of the antipasto delights: roasted cauliflower, sauteed broccoli rabe, roasted carrots, and Setti Anni peppers. While I was surprised that they were served cold, (My fault, not their’s – it was antipasto, after all!) they were all excellently prepared, and not overly oily, which is an issue I often find with antipasto vegetables.

antipasto vegetables

Anthony had cavatelli with sausage, dad had rigatoni with ragu, and mom had grilled octopus with roasted artichoke. Everyone enjoyed their entrees, and I stole several hundred bites Anthony generously shared some of his sausage with me.

For desert, we shared a cheese plate, which was perfectly lovely, though we were too full from the amazing meal to fully enjoy it.

The whole family!

All in all, I’d highly recommend a visit to Frankie’s Spuntino, an affordable and nourishing restaurant to the soul and spirit.

How to move across the world

So, I figure, after my rather significant announcement yesterday, anyone who has or will be reading this might be curious how one makes a decision to move across the planet. We didn’t just wake up one morning and decide to move 9,634 miles away (no joke!), but the decision did come from one weekend this past August.

It all started when we went to visit Sylvain. Sylvain, I blame this all on you. Thanks. :-)

Sylvain and Kat

Me and Sylvain. I'm a dork. And was sober.

Anthony and I both needed a vacation, so we went to visit our dear friend Sylvain, who has a cottage in rural Canada, an hour north of Sudbury, which is in turn an hour north of Toronto by plane. Needless to say, it was gorgeous.

Idyllic Canada lake

Gorgeous, right?

We had an amazing time over the four days, living in nature (we went camping and fishing, two firsts for this city gal) eating good food, drinking good wine, and generally getting away from it all. It’s funny what getting away from “it all” does – it gives you space, time to think, and time to ask yourself what it is you’re doing, and what you really want in your life.

Now, Anthony always had some niggling in his mind to return home to Brisbane, Australia. I always had some nagging intention to live outside of New York. Having lived in Manhattan 21 of my 24 years, I knew that I wanted to experience something different.

New York was also getting overwhelming to me. One of the interesting side effects I’ve found of adding so much yoga to my life is that I am much more sensitive to energy, and living in New York is one of the most constant exposures you can receive to whirling, tumbling energy. I was getting exhausted, and feeling too young to be drained all the time.

Now, there were a ton of other reasons that went into the decision that, to protect other’s privacy, I can’t write on the blog. However, they were definitely a major factor in the decision to make such a huge move.

So, we made our choice that weekend. To change everything about our lives together as we knew it.

Instead of taking a three week vacation to Brisbane at the end of the year, we’d use that as the first stage of a move.

Instead of continuing our lives together as we had known it, we would take on what would quite possibly be the biggest challenge our relationship had ever (and hopefully will ever!) know.

Instead of keeping our lives the same, we would jump off the carousel and into the adventure of our lives.

Instead of continuing to write in sappy dramatics, I will stop and show you another pretty picture of Canada.

Beautiful Canada

Canadaaaaahhhhh.

The best part about the decision came a week later, when we sat down and looked at our finances. Since we met, we’ve had a fantasy of taking two months off to travel around Europe, and explore to our hearts content. Considering we’d have a few months of not paying rent on a Manhattan apartment, and that we both have been saving like rabid squirrels for many years, we realized that the time after we quit our jobs in December would be an amazing opportunity to travel the world and live this dream.

So, here is our crazy, insane, magical itinerary for the next six months.

Insane Incredible Itinerary

December 6-31st – Brisbane, Australia (and all around Queensland)

December 31st – January 10th – NYC (I have a few grad classes left to teach at YogaWorks, plus a non-refundable return ticket from the first trip)

January 10th – 15th – West Palm Beach, Florida, to spend time with my grandmother.

January 15th – 25th – Sarasota, Florida, to spend time with my parents

January 26th – Leave for Israel

January 27th – Feb 4th – Israel

Feb 4th – Feb 10th – Greece

Feb 20th – March 5th – Italy

March 5th to March 9th – Barcelona

March 9th – March 23rd – France

March 23rd – March 26th – Amsterdam

March 26th – April 8th – New York City, for my 25th birthday and the Jewish Holidays

April 8th – ?? – Brisbane, Australia

How do I feel about all this? Exhilarated, excited, thrilled, and mostly terrified. I’ve never been to Australia. I’ve never lived outside of the U.S. Heck, I’ve never even lived in Suburbia. Besides a stint in LA for University, I’ve never lived more than 20 minutes from my mom, who I love more than anyone in the world. I talk to my whole family every day. For crying out loud, there’s a 15 hour time difference!

However, to have an adventure means, by definition, to do something you’ve never done before. So, we’ll see. Australia, and the coming months, will most definitely be an adventure, at the very least. I’ll get the chance that so few people have to truly explore the world and see how amazing it is. I thank my lucky stars and the universe every day for this extraordinary opportunity, and I truly can’t wait for the roller-coaster to start.

I hope that you’ll come along for the ride with me.

Namaste, ya’ll.

Question of the Day: What’s the Biggest Decision You’ve Ever Made? How did it go?

I’m Moving….!!!!!!

Hi everyone,

Well, I hope you’re all doing well.

Today’s workout was all over the place, because Ant and I only had 25 minutes to work out so he could get to work on time. So I could piece together at least 45 minutes, I combined about 700 workouts for a lil baby that looked like this:

Workout of the Day:

  • 5 minutes incline walking (7.5 incline, 4.0 mph)
  • 2x Body cross punches with cable pull (15 reps each side, 25 lbs)
  • 2x Step ups (15 reps each leg, 20 lbs total)
  • 2x Lunges (15 each leg, 20 lbs total)
  • 2x 50 various crunches on the exercise ball
  • 7 minute run with my moms dog
  • 10 minute run to my clients house
  • 15 minute speed walk back from my clients house

It was a hodgepodge, but it worked!

Breakfast

Breakfast was a divine pumpkin spice smoothie that absolutely hit the spot. It hit the spot so quickly, however, that I totally forgot to take pictures. I’m working on that one.

Pumpkin Spice Smoothie:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1/2 cup goat yogurt
  • 3/4 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 6 cubes ice
  • 1.5 cups vanilla almond milk
  • 1/2 packet stevia
  • big dash vanilla
  • lots of cinnamon
  • dash nutmeg
  • smaller dash cloves
Blend. Enjoy.

But enough of that. I have a big announcement to make.

I’m moving to Australia!

In…um…six days.

:: sheepish grin ::

How we will travel around. Just kidding.

I wasn’t able to blog about it before because of personal reasons, but finally I’m able to write and share about it. Anthony and I are moving to Brisbane, Australia, which is about 45 minutes away from the gold coast.

Australia map w/ Brisbane

My new home. Somehow, they forgot Tasmania. It's at the bottom.

Now, in total honesty, our first trip there is just three weeks long, and we will be returning to New York on December 31st. More on our future (insane) travel plans tomorrow, but it involves trips to Florida, two months in Europe, and an hour and a half in Seoul.

The past three months of preparing for this trip has been some of the most intense of my life. While it is undeniably exciting and joy-filled, it’s also hard. I’m so close to my family – I see my parents two to three times per week (I’m my mom’s personal trainer and yoga teacher, as well as, ya know, her baby.) I love being just a walk from my sister, brother-in-law, niece and aunt, and 45 minutes by train from my extended family. Moving to the other end of the world is inconceivable to me, even though I am so blessed as to have the most amazing Australian family, by way of Anthony.

Ant, me, and Ant's mom.

It’s also involved getting rid of basically all my possessions. My furniture, most of my books, my beloved kitchenware – it’s too expensive to move, and more expensive to store than to replace the necessities, so we got rid of almost everything, save for the precious and personal (aka every yoga book I have. I just couldn’t let them go after taking so long to build the collection.) . As a yoga teacher, I really do try to practice non-attachment, and remember that stuff is just stuff. But in the end of the day, letting go of everything that you’ve created and built into a home is just plain tough.

So, I’ve been on a roller-coaster of excitement, terror, sadness, unbridled joy, and anxiety. I can’t wait to go, but I also want to stay with all of my heart. Needless to say, it’s complicated.

But, for now…

I am so excited to get to experience the world and travel with my love. I can’t wait for the opportunity to explore Australia, Europe, and the rest of the world. I hope you’ll come along with me! More details on the trip tomorrow, but I just wanted to let you know.

Much love and happy days,

Kat

Did it for the smoothie.

As some of my tweeps saw today, I didn’t want to work out.

First, I said I’d do it before lunch.

Then noon rolled around, and I didn’t want to move anymore than I had at 11:00 was legitimately hungry.

Lunch

Lunch was leftovers, part two, and even better than breakfast, as my dad made it for dinner and left it for me in the fridge.

Sword fish with lemon-citrus cauliflower

Swordfish with roasted cauliflower with citrus vinigrette – tres fancy, non?

I felt tired, blah and immobile, and the couch was so inviting and warm. I pulled out all the stops – I looked at Julie’s workout mantras, checked out carrots ‘n’ cakes workouts and reached out to twitter for help. Eventually, there was only one thing that would get me on that freakin’ machine – a smoothie.

Workout of the Day:

  • 30 minutes elliptical
  • 3 minute seltzer break (yeah, yeah, I’m lame)
  • 30 minutes elliptical, including 10 second “New Years Eve” countdown at the end…)

Ahhh, the smoothie.

SUPER FANCY SMOOTHIE!

SUPER FANCY SMOOTHIE!

It was magnificent. For some reason, after working out, my fancy smoothie (I added fitnutz to it, to make it doubly fancy) tasted sweeter than ever, even though I only used half a banana and half the normal sweetener. I have a feeling that this is because in the 30 minutes after exercise, your insulin response is doubled, which results in extra stored gylcogen for future workouts. I imagine your tastebuds know this, and make things taste sweeter so you consume more complex carbs. Just a theory. Well, whatever the reason, it got me through the workout and I enjoyed every last slurp.

(Side note: Do you find that straws make everything better? I think they make me feel five again, which is such a good thing.)

On schedule for tonight is my last yoga lesson with Maya before heading off to Australia in six days!

Dinner

Dinner was with the family. I can’t tell you how amazing it is to be able to eat a beautiful home cooked meal with my incredible parents and love. Life is good, kids. Life is good.

Desert was a macoun apple bowl with a cinnamon-vanilla goat yogurt dipping sauce. So delicious.

Big announcement coming tomorrow, but good night for now!

Question of the Day: How do you get yourself to work out when you really, really, really don’t want to?
